吉野杉
吉野林業といわれている地域は、広義には奈良県吉野郡全体を指している。一般にはもっと狭い範囲、即ち奈良県の中央部を東西に流れる吉野川の上流域にある川上村、東吉野村、黒滝村の3村で構成されている地域をいう。

日本の森林は、その長い歴史の中で幾つかの危機に直面しました。それを1つ1つ乗越え森を守る人々がいます。吉野林業は伝統的な育林作業の方法で、環境に与えるダメージを抑制しています。 森林は決して静止していません。生きて動いています。日本の森林のうち人口林は、密植して間伐するという独特の循環システムを持ち、植付け本数と間伐をコントロールすることで保持されてきました。今森は危機に直面しています。これまでのような破壊的な伐採によるものではなく、逆に放置された森林の荒廃、という点に大きな特徴があります。人工林は、たとえていえば「畑」のようなものです。一定の年輪に達したものは放置しないで伐採してやることが、山の健康を維持するためにも欠かせない条件です。森林は、地上資源であり、太陽が輝き、人間の手入れさえ行き届いていれば、永遠に再生してくれます。
